ISI professor killed in road accident on BT Road

Kolkata: A 58-year-old professor of the Indian Statistical Institute was killed in a road accident on BT Road.
Police said the incident took place when the victim, Chivukula Anjanea Murthy, was returning home from the institute.
However, the police are yet to ascertain how the accident had actually taken place. Initially, the police were told by some of the local residents that an unknown vehicle had hit the professor, when he was waiting at a bus stand while returning home, which had resulted in his death.
Another set of people told the police that Murthy had boarded an auto-rickshaw in front of the institute, to reach his home at Malancha near Baranagar in North 24-Parganas and he fell from the vehicle on the way. Another vehicle ran him over when he fell on the road.
Police, with help of the local people, took him to Sagar Dutta Hospital, where he was declared brought dead.
The police spoke to the victim's family members and initiated a probe in this connection. A police officer said that they are trying to ascertain the exact nature of the road accident that claimed the life of the professor.
The police are also going through footages of surveillance cameras, to identify the vehicle that had actually hit the professor.
The local people demanded necessary steps so that accidents on the stretch can be avoided.
The police have taken all necessary measures to avoid further accidents on the road.
A senior police officer said that steps have been taken to keep a watch on the auto-rickshaws in the area and that immediate steps would be taken if any case of rash driving is found.
