Iron spiral case collapse kills labourer, 1 hurt

Kolkata: One man was killed and another suffered serious injuries when an old iron spiral staircase collapsed on them on Tuesday.

The incident occurred when the duo was repairing pipes in the main water supply tank inside BENFISH complex, Chakgaria, Budherhat in Panchasayar. Both the plumbers were rushed to a private hospital where one of them succumbed to injuries. The other is in critical condition.

The deceased has been identified as Somnath Das, 37, a resident of Hide Road. According to the police, Das fell down from approximately a 60 ft high water tank while he was cleaning the tank at Benfish office at Buderhat. The deceased breathed his last at 5.15 pm on Tuesday.

He was declared brought dead by the hospital authorities.

Narayan Ghosh, the other plumber, is now undergoing treatment at the hospital. According to sources, the plumbers had not taken any safety measures while repairing the water supply tank. The staircase collapsed all of sudden. They tried their best to save their lives. However, their effort went into vain. No FIR has been lodged in connection.
