Infant death case: WBCERC finds ambiguity in statement of docs

Kolkata: West Bengal Clinical Establishment Regulatory Commission (WBCERC) reportedly found some irregularities in the statement of the doctors who were involved in the treatment of four-month-old Kuheli Chakraborty, who eventually died of alleged negligence on the part of Apollo Gleneagles Hospital.
The incident took place in April 2017. A complaint was later lodged with WBCERC in this regard. During investigation, the commission has found certain irregularities in the treatment of the deceased. It has reportedly sought an explanation from the private hospital authorities.
The victim, who had been admitted to the Apollo Gleneagles Hospital for a colonoscopy, had allegedly died of anaesthetic overdose, the patient's kin alleged. The infant's father alleged that she was left unattended for a whole day when she was admitted and was not given any food for more than 12 hours, before conducting the test.
After the matter was raised with the commission, the doctors who were involved in the treatment of the deceased were interrogated on several occasions.
The commission has found some irregularities in the statements of the doctors and also some of the senior officials of the private hospital. It has also expressed its unhappiness over the treatment of the infant.
According to sources in the commission, according to the investigation some negligence in the treatment of the girl was found. The commission will look into the details before giving its final verdict in this regard.
The doctors had allegedly advised to keep her fasted before the colonoscopy, but decided not to go ahead with the test. She was not given any food till the afternoon on the next day. "My daughter became weak and dehydrated. She could not be brought back to consciousness after the test," her father alleged.
Kuheli died as she was allegedly administered anaesthetic drugs after staying on an empty stomach for a long time.
It may be mentioned that the victim's family members had also met Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, seeking her intervention. Banerjee had called up the family members of the girl and assured them that action would be taken against those who were responsible for her death.
