Howrah: Business rivalry leads to scuffle, one injured

Business rivalry led to tension near Shalimar railway yard in Howrah on Sunday morning.

It may be mentioned that two years ago a businessman was shot dead in the area following a scuffle over business rivalry. It has been alleged that on Sunday some youth, who were close to the businessman who was killed, attacked an employee of their rival group.

Sanjay Paswan, who works as a driver, was beaten up with wooden logs. The accused asked him to tell where his employer, Praveen Tiwari, was. He failed to give a satisfactory response as he didn't know where his employer was at that time. Refusing to believe him, the accused started beating him up. They continued to thrash him until he fell on the ground. Some people came forward to rescue Paswan.

The incident led to tension in the area with police rushing to the spot after getting information. Pickets were posted to ensure that the law and order situation in the area doesn't deteriorate and go out of hand.

A complaint has been lodged in this connection with Shibpur police station and a probe has also been initiated in this connection.

Police came to know that the fight between two groups of businessmen had been going for the past few years and it resulted in a person's death two years back. The rival group had been trying over power the other unit and it had been leading to many problems in the area, said a cop adding that necessary steps are being taken to put an end to the problem that was continuing for years now. It is learnt that the police have collected footages of surveillance cameras and the victim alleged that the accused had even attempted to damage valuables in some offices.
