Housewife sets herself on fire, kin blames in-laws

Kolkata: A 27-year-old housewife allegedly tried to commit suicide by setting herself on fire on Thursday night at her residence in Battala, Rajarhat.
The woman, Tania Agni, has been admitted at a private hospital on EM Bypass with nearly 100 per cent burn injury. Her condition is very critical.
The woman's family members, however, alleged that their daughter wanted to become a teacher by completing her PhD but her in-laws did not let her continue
her studies. "They would torture her mentally and physically," alleged the woman's brother Gazi Abes Mollah.
Tania was married four years back and is an MA from Presidency University.
Tania's husband Iqbal Ali is the assistant professor of Aliah University. "My daughter cannot set herself on fire. She was set on fire by her in-laws.
"They would torture her and would demand dowry from us," Tania's father Sattar Gazi said.
Her husband was also involved in an extra-marital affair. Tania's husband Iqbal Ali, however, denied his or his family's involvement in the accident. "He was of a suspicious nature and would complain that I was involved in extra -marital affair. She attempted to commit suicide in the bathroom last (Thursday) night," he said. The Rajarhat police station has initiated a suo motu case in the incident. There has been no complaints from either sides. The police also went to the private hospital where the woman has been admitted. However, she is not in a condition to speak.
