Hospital staff attacked in four separate incidents in state

Kolkata: The incidents of attack on the doctors continued unabated at various hospitals in the state. In four separate incidents hospital staff members were attacked by the family members of patients who died at the hospitals of alleged medical negligence.
The first incident took place at Chinsurah Imambara Hospital where a staff member was injured by the family members of a youth who died at the hospital on Thursday morning. The victim, a resident of Pandua area was taken to the hospital on Wednesday after he had consumed poison. The family members of the youth alleged that as the condition of the patient deteriorated, they urged the hospital authorities to transfer the patient to some other hospital. But the hospital authorities did not listen to their appeals and no steps were taken to shift the patient to any other hospital.
The patient died on Thursday morning and as a result of this, the victim's family members started protest demonstration inside the hospital campus. A hospital staff member who tried to pacify the mob was attacked by the relatives of the patient. They also ransacked a portion of the hospital. The victim's family members alleged that the patient could have been saved if he was shifted to some other hospital. Even the doctors did not treat the patient, they alleged. After being informed, police reached the spot and brought the situation under control. Tension also ran high at Jhargram Superspecialty Hospital following the death of a pregnant woman. Mamoni Mahato was admitted to the hospital where she delivered a baby boy. It was alleged that the bleeding did not stop after the delivery. The doctor then allegedly removed her uterus. The patient died late Wednesday night. A similar incident took place at Rampurhat hospital where the hospital superintendent was gheraoed by the family members of patient who died of alleged medical negligence. The victim, Kajol Dutta was admitted to the hospital with chest pain. After primary treatment he was released from the hospital. He was again taken to the hospital as his condition deteriorated. The patient later died in the hospital.
In another incident, the family members of a deceased staged agitation at Kaliagunge state general hospital in North Dinajpur.
