Hit & run case: Auto rickshaw driver held

Kolkata: An auto-rickshaw driver was arrested on Tuesday in connection with the hit-and-run case of Rajarhat.
A police officer said that the driver of the offending auto-rickshaw, Avijit Roy, was arrested from North 24-Parganas on Tuesday. He is a resident of Rajbati in Madhyamgram.
It may be recalled that the incident had taken place on May 7 and the police had initiated a probe in this connection.
A person was killed in the road accident, in which he was hit by the auto-rickshaw on Rajarhat Road at Raigachi Chotopole area.
The incident took place at around 9.15 pm, when there were few people in the area. It helped the auto-rickshaw driver flee without getting caught by the local people.
After some of the local residents informed the police, they had taken the person to a hospital, where he was declared brought dead. The offending vehicle was also identified and seized.
The police had initiated a case under several sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) on charges of rash driving or riding on a public way (279 IPC) and culpable homicide not amounting to murder (304 IPC).
The local people had demanded arrest of the person who was involved in the accident, as early as possible. The police took all necessary steps to arrest the accused and had gone through the footages of surveillance cameras to identify the auto-rickshaw driver.
After knowing the registration number of the auto-rickshaw, the police had come to know about the residential address of the driver and initiated a search for him.
They searched different places and finally arrested Avijit in this connection. The police are also taking necessary steps so that such incidents
do not take place again in the area.
