HIDCO takes elaborate steps to collect property tax

Kolkata: Housing and Infrastructure Development Corporation (HIDCO) has taken elaborate measures to collect property tax. The special arrangement has been made to ensure that fine is imposed if property owners fail to pay tax by May 31.
Twenty eight additional counters have been opened to receive the tax. Though payment of tax in New Town is taken online, many tax payers, mostly elderly people, are coming to the office to pay tax. They wait in a separate room, while the officials help them to calculate the tax and deposit the money.
HIDCO will keep the counters open on Sunday to collect tax. The officials of HIDCO and New Kolkata Development Authority (NKDA) have been given training to operate the computers, calculate the tax and collect the money. Unit Area Assessment (UAA) is followed to calculate the property tax.
For the past few days HIDCO has engaged a fleet of Totos fitted with microphones and through the public address system, house owners are being requested to pay property tax. HIDCO's efforts have been successful as people are queuing up to pay tax.
It may be mentioned that throughout the state, collection of property tax is a major problem faced by the civic bodies. Big property owners of commercial establishments have a tendency to evade tax.
HIDCO officials had met owners of commercial establishments and discussed about the issue. Later, they were found to be clearing property tax.
