Hemanta Kumar's birth centenary celebrations to continue for a year

Kolkata: Housing Infrastructure Development Corporation ( HIDCO) will hold a year-long programme to celebrate the birth centenary of Hemanta Mukherjee.

Mukherjee was born on June 16 , 1920 in Varanashi. A programme was held at Swapno Bhor, the Senior Citizen's park where a portrait of the singer was garlanded by Sumita Roy Mukherjee, niece of Hemanta Mukherjee and chairman HIDCO Debashis Sen. Despite the Indo Pak world cup cricket match the auditorium at Swapno Bhor was also full.

Sumita Roy Mukherjee exchanged some anecdotes from Mukherjee's life. Noted singer Bibhabindu Bhattacharya sung some popular Bengali and Hindi songs of Mukherjee.

The wax statue of Hementa Mukherjee was garlanded the Mother's Wax Museum. A musical programme was held at the Eco Park. On June 30 a musical programme will be held at Rabindra Tirtha where Sagnik Sen will present Hemanta songs.

The state Power minister Sobhandeb Chattopadhyay garlanded the statue of hemanta Mukherjee on Southern Avenue.

Mukherjee passed out the Matriculation Examination from Mitra Institution Bhowanipore. His classmate was poet Subhas Mukhopadhyay who took him to the all India radio for programmes.

Hemanta Mukherjee became Hemant Kumar in Mumbai where he became famous as a music composer. His music in Hindi movie Nagin was an all-India hit.

Mukherjee had sung some of the all time hit songs composed by Salil Chowdhury like Kono Ek gayer bodhu, Runner, Shono Kono Ekdin, Duranto Ghurnir among others. Mukherjee play backed some famous songs in the lip of Uttam Kumar like Surer Akashe Tumi je go sukhtara, Bose Achi Potho Cheye, Ei Poth Jodi na sesh hoye among others.
