Health dept forms probe committee after nursing student's death

Kolkata: A day after the body of a first year nursing student was found inside the hostel of Calcutta National Medical College and Hospital (CNMCH), the state Health department has formed a 4-member committee to probe into the incident.

The committee that comprises the nursing superintendent, hospital superintendent and principal, has been asked to submit a report within seven days after carrying out a detailed probe.

It may be mentioned here that senior officials of CNMCH will conduct a separate probe in this connection. The city police have already started a specific case following the mysterious death of the nursing student.

Samapti Rui Das was found hanging from the ceiling fan inside her hostel room on Saturday morning by some of the inmates. The matter was immediately informed to the CNMCH authorities. Police soon reached the spot and recovered the body. The investigating officer also recovered a suicide note from her room.

According to the preliminary investigation, police suspect that the deceased might have committed suicide after suffering from mental depression and the same was reflected in her suicide note as well.

The investigating officers are probing to ascertain if the deceased had been subjected to harassment in her workplace. The girl, who originally hailed from Cooch Behar, had faced difficulties in studying her course in English.

The police also came to know that she had wanted to pursue Bengali Honours but had to get into the nursing course instead.
