HC conditional bail to Maoist who cleared SET from home
Kolkata: The Calcutta High Court on Thursday granted conditional bail to Maoist inmate Arnab Dam presently lodged at Hooghly District Correctional Home.
Dam has been in prison since 2012 after he was arrested in connection with Maoist attack at the Silda camp of the Eastern Frontier Rifles from Balarampur in Purulia. Twenty-three jawans were killed in an attack on Silda camp in West Midnapore in February 2010.
The division bench of Justice Joymalya Bagchi and Manojit Mandal granted bail against a surety bond of Rs 50,000 and has directed him not to venture out of the Sonarpur police station area where he lives.
Dam will have to depose before the investigating officer of the case every alternate day. The high court has also directed the state to dispose all cases pending against him in the lower court within a span of six months.
Dam has recently cleared the State Eligibility Test (SET) examination from a correctional home in the state, the results of which was published in March. No person in the state had cleared SET from correctional home before.
Dam wants to do a PhD in environmental studies.
He had bagged his bachelor's and master's degrees in History from Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) from the correctional home and had secured first division in both. Dam had also applied for National Eligibility Test ( NET) examination but failed to appear for the same because he turned up at the examination hall late due to some administrative issues.

He passed his higher secondary examination from Narendra pur Ramkrishna Mission and joined mechanical engineering at IIT Kharagpur. However, in the year 1998 while in his third semester he mysteriously disappeared from the campus .
He was arrested in the year 2005 for Maoist activities and after some months in prison he was out on bail.
Dam was a state committee member of CPI Maoists in Bengal and was active even in areas of neighbouring states of Bihar, Jharkhand and Odisha. He had appeared for her SET examination from Presidency Correctional Home.
