Haldia Petrochemicals fire: Injured labourer passes away

Kolkata: One of the 13 persons injured in the Haldia Petrochemicals fire, died on Wednesday. The deceased has been identified as Sougata Samanta (35) of Mahisadal in East Midnapore.

According to sources, on Friday morning fire suddenly broke out at the naphtha cracker unit in Haldia Petrochemicals. Within minutes, the fire took a devastating shape and the whole unit was ablaze. As the materials in the naphtha cracker unit were highly inflammable, the fire spread quickly.

Several labourers were working in the unit during the mishap and 13 of them were injured due to the fire. The injured labourers were rescued and taken to a local hospital, where they were provided with first aid. The injured were later admitted to a private hospital in the city.

Haldia Petrochemicals authorities had stated on Friday stated that the management would take appropriate action for the welfare of the injured labourers and provide support to their families. Samanta had been working in Haldia Petrochemicals for the last five years.
