Guardians stage protests against fee hike

Kolkata: Tension ran high at Assembly of God Church School on Park Street on Tuesday morning after guardians started staging a demonstration outside the school campus to protest against the school authorities' decision to hike fees.
The incident had disrupted the normal functioning of the school.
The situation turned worse when some of the guardians put a road blockade on Park Street protesting the hike in fees. A huge contingent of police rushed to the spot immediately after the incident as it led to traffic disruption on the busy road.
The guardians were protesting against the hike in the session fees as well as the monthly fees of the students.
Some of the guardians have alleged that nearly 50 percent fee hike was done by the school authorities alone.
Some of the guardians also threatened to continue the protest demonstration on the school campus if the authorities do not revoke their decision.
The agitating guardians have alleged that the school authorities hiked the annual school fees under various heads.
It may be mentioned here that Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee during a meeting with the private
school authorities had instructed them not to increase the fees in a manner that it becomes a burden on the parents.
Despite the Chief Minister's instruction, the school had increased the annual fee structure by a huge margin, alleged the guardians.
A guardian who took part in Tuesday's agitation alleged that the fee which was earlier around Rs 2,850 has been hiked up to more than Rs 4,000.
For Kg classes, the fees has been increased up to Rs 3,600 from what earlier stood at Rs 2,700.
If the hike is done by the school authorities arbitrarily, it would not be possible for them to allow their children to continue study in this school, alleged some of the agitating guardians.
None of the school representatives were available for a comment on the issue.
