Govt urges schools to keep premises clean in bid to tackle dengue

Kolkata: The state School Education department has instructed all the schools to keep their premises clean to prevent the spread of dengue.

It may be recalled that Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has instructed the Urban Development and Municipal Affairs department to ensure that the civic bodies take up the anti-larvae drives seriously.

The schools have been asked to keep their premises clean, remove garbage regularly and ensure that empty plastic cups and bottles are removed from the premises as water accumulated inside plastic bottles without cover serve as the potential breeding ground for mosquitoes. In a bid to make the drives against dengue successful, awareness campaigns among the students will be carried out.

The Chief Minister has already sounded a red alert as many people have been afflicted with the disease in several districts. In North 24-Parganas, over 2,000 people have been affected and the state Health department has released funds worth Rs 7.5 crore to combat spread of the disease.

The Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) has taken up several measures to combat dengue as well. Civic officials are visiting the educational institutions, healthcare establishments and state and Central government offices and notices are being sent if the premises are found to be unclean.

The city has been divided into eight zones and 20 wards have been identified as vulnerable, where special drives have been carried out.

Due to change in weather conditions, the mosquitoes have changed their breeding season and along with Aedes Egypti, Aedes Albopictus have been found that also cause dengue.

Entomologists said that holes in the trunks of trees serve as the breeding ground of Aedes Albopictus, which are generally found in semi-urban and rural areas where there are more open spaces.

They maintained that the municipalities should involve local people and the holes in tree trunks need to be covered with clay.
