Govt to ensure social rehabilitation of disabled

Kolkata: The state Social Welfare department is taking measures to ensure that people with disabilities get social rehabilitation after pursuing their studies. "We are focusing on social and economic rehabilitation for people with disabilities. We have to go beyond providing them with walking sticks, braille books or equipment for the disabled," minister of state for Women & Child Development & Social Welfare Shashi Panja said on Sunday.
"We are holding a two-day Rozgar Mela for the disabled that will kick off at the College Square Grounds on Monday. As many as 10 companies are expected to hire disabled candidates for jobs out of 500 candidates who will be appearing at the Mela. This event will be a job opportunity for them," she said. There will be seven government stalls and as many as 37 NGOs will also put up their stalls at the Rozgar Mela.
The Centre has already come out with the new Disability Act that will help people suffering from diseases like haemophilia and thallasaemia under the purview of the Act. "We are working to implement the Act in our state through the requisite processes and clearances," Panja said.
Panja attended a government programme to mark the occasion of International Day of the Persons with Disabilities and presented state awards to the people who have overcome their disabilities and have been achievers. Awards were given in categories of Best Sports, Best Role Model, Creative Adult, Self Employed, Best individual working for the cause of Disability etc.
