GJM faces severe blow as slew of party heavyweights quit

Darjeeling: Front rung GJM Central Committee leaders from Kalimpong, including the Kalimpong MLA, resigned on Saturday.

After the split in the GJM, with one faction led by Bimal Gurung and the other by Binay Tamang, these leaders did not pledge support to any of the factions. "With the present agitation becoming directionless, the party has split. It was difficult for us to decide whom to support. Thus we decided on this, " stated R B Bhujel. Despite national support the agitation was directionless, alleged Bhujel. The Central Committee leaders handing in their resignation on Saturday included MLA Sarita Rai, Kalyan Dewan, RB Bhujel and 17 others. Municipality Councillors Subha Pradhan, Lhamu Tshering Bhutia, Dhanlaxmi Tamang, Bimla Chettri, Babita Chaurasia and Ratna Pakhrin Bomzan also tendered their resignation from the primary membership of the party. "We will not join any other party and will remain neutral," stated Bhujel.
