Girl kills self after being asked not to overindulge in social media sites

Kolkata: In a tragic incident, a Class XI student from Habra in North 24 Parganas committed suicide by hanging herself from the ceiling fan after she was asked not to overindulge in social networking sites.

The incident occurred on Friday night when the other members were away from home. Police have started a probe to ascertain the exact reason behind her

committing suicide. The incident triggered tension among the local people.

The victim, Mampi Das, used to remain busy with her mobile phone most of the time when at home. She used to remain busy on social networking sites including Facebook and WhatsApp. After the family members came to know about the incident, they asked the girl not to spend so much time on social media. Following the incident, the victim had remained depressed.

The incident reached to its climax on Friday night when the victim's elder brother Dulal Das rebuked the girl for overindulging on social networking sites. The family members of the victim also became scared after incidents of deadly Blue Whale reported in the state. They were frightened that she had started playing the deadly game on her mobile phone.

On Friday night, Dulal found Mampi busy on a social networking site and asked her to stop overindulgence on social networking. An

altercation also broke out between the two over using mobile phone.

The victim's family members went to the hospital as Dulal's wife was admitted there as she is undergoing treatment. When they returned home, they found the door locked from inside.

Despite repeated knocks, she did not open the door. The family members later broke open the door and found her hanging from the ceiling fan. She was rushed to Habra hospital where she was declared brought dead.

After starting an investigation, police came to know that the victim had claimed herself to be dead in her WhatsApp profile which the investigators are probing into. The police are investigating if she had committed suicide after being jilted in a love affair. Police are also investigating if anybody had instigated her to commit suicide. The body has been sent for post-mortem.
