Girl commits suicide after mother takes away phone

Kolkata: A 17-year-old girl committed suicide at her residence at Chowbaga Road under Tiljala police station area after her mother took away her cell phone due to her growing addiction to social networking sites and WhatsApp. Police sources informed that Jyoti Prasad Shaw's body was found hanging with a dupatta from the ceiling fan at around 9 pm. The door was locked from inside and the police had to break open the door with the help of the girl's father and her neighbours. The girl was taken to National Medical College Hospital where she was declared brought dead. "Our enquiry revealed that the girl, a student of Class IX of a local school, was suffering from depression. She had been indifferent as her mother had rebuked her 3 days ago for her excessive addiction to Facebook, WhatsApp and other social media sites," a senior officer of the Tiljala police station said. Meanwhile, in another case the Bhowanipore police arrested the security guard of SSKM hospital for taking Rs 500 as bribe for quick handover of blood report of a patient. Shyamal Kumar Nath was arrested on the basis of a complaint lodged by the patient's kin.
