Gang of thieves arrested for stealing gold jewellery worth Rs 18 lakh

Kolkata: Kolkata Police have arrested a gang of thieves originally hailing from Banka, Bihar, in connection with a theft committed at the residence of one Sunil Singh of New Alipore in South Kolkata on October 21. The sleuths have also managed to recover jewellery worth Rs 18 lakh that were being hidden at locations in Kulti in Asansol and Punjab.

Singh had engaged one Pawan Yadav as a servant in October who allegedly fled with the gold just two days after his appointment. Singh could not provide any phone number and submitted an improper address of Yadav at Banka, Bihar.

The sleuths interrogated a number of people from Banka working as servants in New Alipore and Bhawanipore and managed to get a photograph of Yadav and it was identified by the complainant. They also collected phone numbers of those who were interrogated.

A team was sent to his address at Banka and learnt that Yadav was not contacting the family for some months. They got the mobile number of Yadav that was being used by him in Kolkata.

The sleuths during the course of investigation found that Yadav's tower location on the day of crime was same as another servant, Nitesh, who used to work in a nearby area. Nitesh's tower location was tracked and it was found that both he and Yadav had gone to one of their relative's residences at Kulti soon after the crime. A team went there and found that some of the stolen ornaments were handed over to Nitesh's sister Sunita Devi, her husband Kameswar Jadav and another family member Akhilesh Yadav. The three were detained and after interrogation they admitted having the share of the stolen booty and were nabbed. Another person, Prem Bahadur, who was their neighbour was also arrested for being the beneficiary.

After interrogating them the police finally managed to trace Nitesh and Yadav from Punjab's Sunam City. All the gold ornaments have been finally recovered.
