Four killed, 40 injured in four separate incidents

Kolkata: Four persons were killed while 40 others have been injured in four separate accidents which took place in the state since Sunday night.
The first incident took place on Sunday night between Mecheda and Kolaghat railway stations when 30-year-old Kamalesh Jana died after being knocked down by a goods train. According to the police, Jana, a resident of Shantipur area of Mecheda, was trying to cross the railway line when the accident took place.
In another incident, 19-year-old Shraman Sahani, who was travelling to Kharagpur in Howrah-Midnapore local, was killed after being hit by an electrical pole. Railway police said that the victim, who used to work for a catering company, was going to Kharagpur along with 39 others. The victim was standing at the gate. When the train was arriving at Panskura station, the victim was hit by the electric pole and fell by the side of the track. He was a resident of Chandpur area in the city. Some of his associates who were accompanying him, told the police that the train was overcrowded, as a result of which the accident might have taken place. Railway police recovered the body and sent it to Tomluk Hospital for the post-mortem examination. Police have started a probe in this regard.
In a separate accident, two youths who were riding on a motorcycle, were killed after being hit by a speeding truck. The incident took place near Saipur area under Falta police station in South 24-Parganas early on Monday morning.
According to the police, the victims were riding on their bike along the Diamond Harbour Road when a speeding truck lost control and hit the bikers. The victims have been identified as Sukumar Marik and Palash Hayit.
Local residents recovered the victims and rushed them to the hospital where they were declared dead. The truck driver fled along with the vehicle immediately after the accident. According to the preliminary investigation, police suspect that the accident might have taken place due to poor visibility. Police are also investigating to know if the driver was in a drunken state. Raids are being conducted to nab the driver.
In another incident, as many as 40 people have been injured when the bus they were travelling in collided head-on with a truck. The incident took place near Duttapukur More on Jessore Road in the wee hours of Monday. According to the police, there were some Bangladeshi nationals among the injured. The drivers of both the vehicles received injuries in the accident. The injured passengers were taken to Barasat District Hospital. Among the injured, 10 are stated to be in serious condition.
