Riya Ghosh (24), a former national level volleyball player, died of alleged medical negligence by Baranagar Municipal Maternity Home (also known as Matri Sadan) early on Sunday morning.

The family members of the victim alleged that she gave birth to a baby boy on Saturday evening and later her condition turned critical. But there was no doctor to attend her and her family members alleged that the hospital authorities did not provide them ambulance when they were trying to shift her to another hospital.

The family members of the patient also alleged that the doctor was requested several times to attend to the patient but their requests went in vain. As a result, the family members decided to shift her to another hospital as her condition became serious.

But the hospital authorities failed to provide an ambulance to shift her and when it was finally arranged by the family members on their own, the patient was rushed to R G Kar Hospital at around 3 am on Sunday but the entire exercise proved futile. The patient expired on her way to the hospital and was declared brought dead by the doctors at RG Kar.

The family members of the victim lodged a complaint with the local police.

Riya, a resident of Belghoria, was admitted to the hospital few days ago. The family members accused the doctor under whom she had been admitted for the death of the patient. The family members of the victim on Sunday staged a demonstration at the hospital and demanded action against the accused doctors. They alleged that despite repeated calls to the doctors by the staff members of the hospital, they did not visit the patient. They alleged that medical negligence by the doctors led to her death.

Baranagar municipality has ordered a probe into the death of the victim. Police have also started an investigation in this regard on the basis of the complaint lodged by the victim's family members.
