Foot over-bridge to connect new & old bldg of Dr R Ahmed Dental College & Hospital

Kolkata: State health department in association with the Bengal chapter of Indian Dental Association (IDA) is all set to organise a year long programme in the city on the occasion of the centenary celebration of Dr R Ahmed Dental College and Hospital which set up in 1920 by Dr R Ahmed, one of the forefathers of Indian dentistry.

Meanwhile, the foundation stone of a 51 metre-long foot over-bridge would be laid that would connect the new and old buildings of Dr R Ahmed Dental College and Hospital situated on the either side of AJC Bose road near Moulali. There had been a delay in initiating the construction work of the proposed foot over-bridge which will be immensely handy for transporting patients from one building to the other. The doctors and the patients alike welcomed the move taken by the state government.

A senior official of Dr R Ahmed Dental College and Hospital said they often faced problems to shift the patients from one building to the other by crossing the busy AJC Bose road.

Hence the dental college authorities had sent a proposal to the state government stressing on the need of a foot bridge over the AJC Bose road. The state health department has given a go-ahead with the project. The Public Works Department will carry out the project.

The centenary celebration of the hospital will be celebrated in two pronged ways — one by the IDA as its annual conference and the other as the centenary celebration on Indian dentistry on December 24 which is the birth day of Dr R Ahmed.

As a part of a year-long celebration, scientific sessions would be held at the hospital where national level speakers would take part. Symposiums would also be conducted on inter disciplinary dentistry and awareness camps would be held on oral cancer and other diseases throughout the year. Free health check up camps would also be held as a part of the celebration. The year long programme will start at the hospital campus on December 24 this year and will end on December 24 next year.

Dr TK Giri, chairman of the centenary celebration committee and the principal of Dr R Ahmed Medical College and Hospital, said: "Science, culture and education unite all of us in an event of such magnitude. We are inviting all the dental surgeons to come and witness this grand event."

Dr Partha Pratim Chowdhury, organizing secretary of 55th IDA state conference said: "The centenary celebration along with the 55th IDA conference is a platform where the old and new generation of dental surgeons can exchange their views. We are thankful to the state government for its whole hearted cooperation."
