Kolkata: Police arrested five persons from Karunamoyee Park at Salt Lake on charges of manhandling policemen, when asked to stop playing loud music on Thursday night.

A case has been started with Bidhannagar East police station in this connection under various sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). They have been charged with - voluntarily causing hurt to deter public servant from his duty (332 IPC), assault or criminal force to deter public servant from discharge of his duty (353 IPC), obstructing public servant in discharge of public functions (186 IPC), disobedience to order duly promulgated by public servant (188 IPC), punishment for criminal intimidation (506 IPC) and acts done by several persons in furtherance of common intention (34 IPC).

Police said that a programme was going on at Karunamoyee Park in Salt Lake on Thursday evening. Some local people informed the police that loud music was being played even at around 11.15 pm. Additional Sub-Inspector (ASI) Amal Karar went to the spot along with a constable and found that loud music was being played during the live programme, violating the norms.

The ASI urged the organisers to stop the programme. But none paid heed to his request. Instead, they started arguing with the ASI, which finally led to an altercation between him and some youths there.

The situation turned worse when they attacked the policemen. They started manhandling the ASI when he attempted to stop the programme. They not only stopped him from discharging his duty, but also tore his uniform.

Finding no other way out, the ASI and the constable left the place. They went to a safe location and contacted the police station for backup.

A large contingent of police was sent to the spot and the situation was brought under control. Police arrested five persons - Sandipan Ghosh (45), Supratik Ghosh (59), Akash Soni (35), Sumit Kuthai (31) and Shekhar Jalan (26). They are in search of other persons involved in the incident.
