Fire guts wooden houses in Darjeeling

Darjeeling: A devastating fire gutted three wooden houses at Lumthang village at Happy Valley Tea Estate in Darjeeling on Thursday morning. It took more than two-and-a-half-hours to control the flames.

"The fire broke out around 10:30 am and the cause of the incident is unknown. Three houses have been gutted. The fire engines could not reach on time owing to narrow roads. Nothing could be saved from the three houses but no one was injured in the incident," said local resident Bimala Rai.

Local residents said the gutted houses belonged to Bhawna Gurung, Bhupen Karki and Shankar Dorji.

"Due to narrow roads we faced problems and it took us a lot of time to reach the spot. As there was scarcity of water here we had to keep getting water from outside.

"Local residents also helped us by providing water," said a fire department official.
