Fire breaks out at top floor of Fancy Market, no casualties

Kolkata: A major fire broke out at the top floor of Fancy Market in Kidderpore on Monday night. Seven fire tenders were pressed into action to subdue the blaze. According to local residents, fire broke out at around 9:05 pm on the 4th floor of Fancy Market. They saw flames raging out of the windows and alerted the occupants of the building as well as the police.

As soon as the information was received by the police, fire brigade was informed. In the first phase, four fire tenders were sent to douse the fire. Sources have informed that the fire had erupted from a restaurant located on the top floor.

Local residents claimed that there are warehouses on the top floor of the market which are filled with garments and other materials. As the objects were highly inflammable, the fire started spreading quickly. By the time fire brigade arrived, fire had already spread to the 3rd floor. As soon as the fire tenders reached, they started spraying water from all sides of the building, trying to contain the fire within the building.

As the whole area was covered with dense smoke, occupants of other adjacent buildings got panic-stricken and rushed out. As per last report, firefighters have successfully brought the fire under control. No casualties have been reported. Mayor Firhad Hakim rushed to the spot soon and talked with the fire officials. He later said: "Fire officials told me that the fire has been controlled. It is a very old market and the local economy is based on it. It is our luck that nothing major happened."
