Final year student found dead inside hostel room

Mystery shrouds the death of a final year student of R Ahmed Dental College and Hospital, whose body was found hanging from the ceiling fan of her room in the women's hostel at Munchipara on Sunday morning.

Police said the deceased, Ankita Sarkar (23) was a resident of Chakdah in Nadia and used to stay in the hostel in a room with three other students of the same college.

Preliminary investigation revealed that all her roommates had left for their homes on Saturday morning as there was a holiday for three consecutive days. Only Ankita stayed back and she told her roommates that she would not go home this time as she had to complete some pending work in the city.

It was around 11 am on Sunday when another girl of the hostel came to her room for some work. She found the door of the room locked from inside. She knocked on the door several times but there was no response and then she informed the matter to the hostel authorities.

Police came to the spot and broke open the door to find her hanging from the ceiling of the room. They sent the body for an autopsy and her parents were informed.

Investigation revealed that the victim had spoken to her mother on Saturday evening over phone and had asked her mother to come to her hostel on Sunday morning.

The hostel authorities and other girls told the police that they did not find anything suspicious in her movement and she spoke normally to others even on Saturday afternoon.

Police initiated a probe in this connection and searched her room to find if she had left anything in writing.

The investigating officers would also speak to her roommates to know whether they had seen anything suspicious in her behaviour over the past few days.
