Fee issue: South Calcutta Law College students ransack it

Kolkata: Tension gripped South Calcutta Law College on Friday after a section of students resorted to ransacking the college alleging exorbitant fees. Sources said that the students vandalised chairs, notice boards and the name plate of the principal of the college in the afternoon while he was not present at the college. "Whenever we had approached the principal for talks regarding fees, which is much higher in comparison to many other colleges, he refused to talk to us. He would say that we have to meet and discuss the matter with the Education minister. We have to cough up Rs 21,500 while students of other law colleges have to shell out in the range of Rs 4,500," a student alleged. The students who resorted to such act of vandalism were allegedly armed with flags of Trinamool Congress Chhatra Parishad. "We will not tolerate such violent acts in educational institutions. Those who have resorted to such act of vandalism, carrying flags of the party, will be strongly dealt with. I have spoken with the Principal of the college and have instructed him to take strong action against the offenders," Education minister Partha Chatterjee said, The minister also told president of TMCP Jaya Dutta to enquire into the matter and if necessary dissolve the unit in the college. A senior official of the college said that he will take strong steps and will lodge a complaint with Gariahat police station.
