Feasibility study begins for proposed flyover constructions

Kolkata: Feasibility study for construction of the proposed flyovers in the city and its adjacent areas has started to ensure fast execution of the projects.
Mamata Banerjee government has proposed to set up around seven flyovers in and around the city to further improve the infrastructure for road connectivity.
It may be mentioned that the city has only 6 per cent of its area as roads. With constant increase in number of vehicles on an everyday basis, construction of flyovers on major thoroughfares will improve the road connectivity.
This comes when Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee announced on Friday that an additional investment in the financial year 2017-18 for infrastructure development. In addition to the budget of Rs 20,155.16 crore for construction of bridges, flyover, roads, power stations, etc, the state government has decided to invest another Rs 12,180 crore.
According to an official of the state Public Works Department, the feasibility study of the bridges that will be coming up in the city and its adjoining areas has started.
The feasibility study is carried out before taking up any project. But in case of some of the proposed flyovers, certain aspects have to be kept in mind. One of the proposed flyovers will be coming up on Chittaranjan Avenue.
First of all, there are tram tracks, Metro railways, old buildings, etc for which
necessary measures need to be taken so that the construction can be carried out without facing any problem after starting the work or when the work is half done.
"It is a complicated task to construct a flyover on an important thoroughfare like Chittaranjan Avenue as it remains busy with thousands of vehicles plying on it round the clock. So we have to make an elaborate and proper plan before starting the construction work," the official said adding that the process to initiate the feasibility study had begun soon after receiving the nod for the projects.
The work to prepare the Detailed Project Report (DPR) will start soon after the report of the feasibility study comes. The official said that the report will be ready after Durga Puja.
Another flyover will be coming up on APC Road to make the travel from Shyambazar towards Sealdah free from traffic congestion. The flyover would be of immense help in ensuring that there is no traffic congestion on the road mainly during the morning and evening rush hours.
Moreover there are several schools along the road and traffic congestion is a daily routine when the schools get over. With the construction of the flyover, people can take it to reach their destination avoiding the rush on APC Road when schools get over.
At the same time another flyover has been proposed on Prince Anwar Shah Road. The feasibility study of the flyover has also been started and the report of the study will be submitted soon.
