Kolkata: A father and his 11-year-old son were killed in a tragic road accident that took place at Maheshtala in South 24-Parganas on Wednesday morning.
The victims have been identified as Rahamat Ali (55) and his son Seikh Sanaullah (11). The father, a daily wage labourer, was travelling in a matador along with his son, who was supposed to unload the bricks the vehicle was carrying.
Police said that the victims were crushed under the loaded vehicle after it overturned.
According to police, the bricks were loaded into the vehicle from the Birlapur area of South 24-Parganas. Apart from the victims, there were two other labourers in the vehicle, whose job was to unload the vehicle at Chattaraipur in the same district.
On the way, the vehicle was passing through a narrow road. As the vehicle was loaded, it lost balance suddenly, overturned and fell into a roadside ditch.
The two victims were trapped under the vehicle while the other two sustained injuries on various parts of their bodies.
Some of the local residents rushed to the spot and tried to remove the trapped ones from under the vehicle.
Police later reached the spot and removed the victims, who were declared brought dead at a nearby hospital. The bodies have been sent for postmortem examination.
The two other injured persons were undergoing treatment at the hospital. Police have started a specific case in this regard and arrested the driver of the vehicle on the charges of negligence. A probe has been initiated.
