Family members ransack nursing home in Burdwan after patient's death

Kolkata: The relatives of a patient who died of alleged medical negligence by a private nursing home in Burdwan ransacked some portions of the nursing home on Sunday morning triggering tension in the area.
The victim, Sumit Thakur, a resident of Natungunge Pashikhana area of Burdwan was first taken to CT Nursing home in Nababhat area after he complained of abdominal pain. But his condition deteriorated since Saturday night.
After his admission, the doctors at the nursing home said the patient had been suffering pain in his appendix. The doctors on Friday performed a surgery.
The family members alleged that the doctors performed the surgery without informing the family members.
They also alleged that the patient was shifted to Nurdwan Medical
College and Hospital after the patient died on Sunday morning.
As the news of the patient's death reached his village, people in large number started pouring into the nursing home.
They brought stones, iron rods with them and went on ransacking a portion of the nursing home.
Some of the staff members of the nursing home were also allegedly beaten up by the family members of the victim. Furniture, television and other utensils of the nursing home reception were damaged during the incident.
Locals put up a road blockade on GT Road on Sunday morning to protest against the incident.
The incident led to traffic congestion on the busy road. A huge contingent of police rushed to the spot to bring the situation under control.
A quarrel broke out between the police and agitators when the latter refused to lift the road blockade. According to local sources, police resorted to lathi charge to disperse the mob.
The family members of the deceased demanded the arrest of the nursing home owner.
The nursing home authorities, however, denied any negligence on the part of the hospital.
Police have started a detailed probe in this regard. None has been arrested so far in this connection.
