Family members ransack hospital after woman's death

Kolkata: Tension sparked off in the Raigunge district hospital late on Monday night after family members of a patient who died at the hospital ransacked a portion of the hospital alleging medical negligence.
Shuktara Begum, an expecting woman from Baidara village of Itahar, was taken to the hospital on Monday morning afte she was in labour pain. The family members of the victim alleged that she was kept unattended for nearly 7-8 hours and no treatment was done on the patient. As a result of which, the situation later got complicated. At around 8 pm on Tuesday, a gynecologist came to see the patient when the family members of the patient staged a demonstration in front of the doctor. A heated altercation broke out between the doctor and the relatives of the patient. The incident soon turned ugly as the mob attacked the doctor who received injuries in the incident.
The mob also damaged a portion of the hospital and ransacked furniture. After being informed, the police reached the spot and rescued the victim doctor who told the police that he came for a round at the time he when he is supposed to come to but the relatives of the patient pounced on him and manhandled him.
The police brought the situation under control after dispersing the mob. The family members have alleged that the victim was undergoing enormous pain but no doctor turned up for her treatment.
The hospital superintendent Dr Goutam Mondal said that a complaint has been lodged against the
accused who led the attack at the local police station and the cops have started a probe in this regard.
