Family members heckle doctor at Habra hospital after death of woman

Kolkata: Tension spread among patients in Habra State General Hospital on Thursday morning, after the family members of a 56-year-old woman, who died of alleged medical negligence, heckled some doctors of the hospital.

Laxmi Raha (56), a resident of Joygachi in Habra, was taken to the hospital after she complained of high fever. Raha died in the hospital on Thursday morning, following which chaos broke out at the hospital. The family members of the victim staged a protest demonstration inside the hospital complex.

After being informed by hospital authorities, police reached the spot and tried to pacify the irate mob. They asked the patient's family members to submit a written complaint in the police station. When the police officers were trying to bring the situation under control, the deceased's son, along with two others, attacked a doctor inside the hospital.

The incident occurred in front of the policemen. A doctor was beaten up by the victim's son and his two associates. However, on-duty police personnel managed to catch hold of the trio and they were detained.

A huge contingent of police rushed to the spot to bring the situation under control. The family members staged a demonstration inside the hospital, demanding stern action against the doctors, who they claimed were responsible for the death of the woman.

The family members also alleged that the patient was not given proper treatment after she was admitted to the hospital with high fever. The police soon brought the situation under control and started a probe into the incident. The hospital authorities, however, claimed that the woman had serious complications when she was admitted to the hospital.

The incident has happened within two months after some junior doctors at NRS Medical College and Hospital were beaten up by the relatives of a deceased. The incident had triggered a stir in the state with the junior doctors continuing a strike, which was withdrawn following the intervention of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.
