Family claims negligence after new-born dies in Suri District Hospital

Kolkata: The family members of a new-born baby, who died at Suri District Hospital in Birbhum, have brought charges of medical negligence against the hospital authorities on Friday.

The incident triggered tension in the hospital when the family members staged a protest demonstration within the hospital campus. It was learnt that the new born baby boy was admitted to Suri District Hospital for the first time on last Wednesday as he was suffering from high fever. It was learnt that one Ambar Saha, a resident of Mahhamad Bazar area in Birbhum, took his wife Pinki Saha to Patelnagar health centre in the district a few days before she passed away. She gave birth to a baby boy there.

As her condition deteriorated after delivery, the woman was rushed to Suri District Hospital.

As her health condition improved, the hospital authorities released the patient and her new born baby. After being taken home, the baby caught high fever. As a result, the family members again took the baby to hospital on last Wednesday.

The family members alleged that the doctors at the hospital prescribed some medicines and released the baby from the hospital. On Thursday evening, the baby fell unconscious. The family members again rushed the baby to the same hospital where the doctors pronounced the new born brought dead.

Following the incident, the family members and some locals staged a protest demonstration inside the hospital campus.

They alleged that the doctors did not properly treat the patient and discharged him from the hospital. The agitation spread tension among other patients admitted there. The situation was later brought under control through police intervention.

The family members lodged a complaint with the hospital superintendent on Friday accusing negligence that led to the baby's death. The hospital authorities have assured that a probe into the incident would conducted in this regard.
