Fake KIT officers held for cheating

Kolkata: Two persons were arrested on charges of cheating people, by taking money while posing as officials of the Kolkata Improvement Trust (KIT), for helping the complainant get a flat.
Police had received a complaint a few days ago, against one Kaushik Sen and his close aide Pranay Sarkar, alias Santo Mitra.
The complainant had alleged that the duo came in touch with him through a common friend and they had introduced themselves as senior officials of the KIT. They also assured all help to him in getting a flat in the KIT Housing Cooperative Society and took money from the complainant.
Before taking the money, the duo had shown various designs and photographs of some flats. They had also prepared forged and fake documents, carrying the emblem of KIT.
The duo had started putting forward various excuses after taking the money and was not helping the complainant in getting the said flat.
Repeated requests of the complainant fell on deaf ears and they were not ready to return the complainant's money either. It was also alleged that the complainant had found their mobile phones switched off and finally lodged a complaint with the police.
The police had initiated a probe based on the complaint lodged with Gariahat police station on Tuesday. They filed a case under various sections of the Indian Penal Code on charges of criminal conspiracy (120B), cheating (420), forgery of valuable security, will, etc. (467 IPC) and forgery for purpose of cheating (468 IPC).
The police are also trying to ascertain whether anyone else is involved in the crime. They have questioned the duo and the statement of the complainant was also taken to verify the answers given by Kausik and Pranay.
The police have found some discrepancies in their statements and would question them again.
