Fake cop duo nabbed while extorting money from truckers

Kolkata: Two persons posing as police officers and extorting money from goods vehicles on Eastern Metropolitan Bypass on Monday night, were arrested by Phoolbagan police station. The duo, Tanvir Hussain and Juber Ahmed, were posing as checking officers from the detective department of Kolkata Police based in Lalbazar.
The two were stopping goods vehicles like matadors and trucks on the road and demanding money from them. The demand for money ranged from Rs 1,000 to Rs 10,000, depending on the size of the vehicles.
A patrol team from the Phoolbagan police station smelt the rat when they found that they were behaving in a rough and arrogant manner with the drivers and even hitting those who refused to pay the money as per their demand.
When the team challenged them and asked for their identity cards, they could not produce any and a bitter argument started. It soon led to a scuffle between the patrol team and the duo. Additional police force from the Phoolbagan police station rushed to the spot and finally the two were overpowered.
The police also managed to seize the car that they were using during the operation. It had the nameplate of one Arkajeet Guin, designated as Additional Director (crime). Interestingly, there is no such rank in Kolkata Police.
Police informed that Juber is a resident of Uttar Pradesh while Tanvir hails from Medinipur. They were produced at Sealdah Court on Tuesday and were remanded to police custody for seven days. It has been learnt that they had earlier done similar acts by using the car with the same nameplate at some other places too.
