Factory fire in Karaya, no casualties reported

Kolkata: A major fire broke out at a factory in Karaya on Sunday morning. Six fire tenders doused the flames almost after three-and-a-half-hours of firefighting.

On Sunday, around 6 am, local residents saw smoke coming out of a rubber footwear factory located on the ground floor of a four-storied building on 45, Masjid Bari Lane in Karaya. They immediately alerted the security guard who was inside the factory.

A biker, who was passing by, called up the police control room and informed about the incident.

He also told the police

that the fire tenders must enter the area from Gobra bus stoppage on Park Circus Connector as the other lane is very narrow.

"It was around 6.05 am when I noticed fire on the ground floor of rubber slipper factory," said Md Athar Ali. After the fire brigade received the call at 6:10 am, within 20 minutes, six fire tenders reached the spot and started spraying water.

The security guard was rescued by local residents. He reportedly suffered minor injuries and was taken to Calcutta National Medical College and Hospital.

As the factory was filled with inflammable materials such as rubbers and paints, within a few minutes the fire started spreading.

It is alleged that

despite the factory was filled with inflammable materials, there was no fire fighting system.

However, firefighters managed to control the fire around 8 am.

Due to quick action, the fire did not spread to other floors of the building.

After the fire was controlled, firefighters started the cooling process to completely douse the flames.

Around 9 am, the fire was completely extinguished.

No major injuries were reported by the police or fire brigade.

The cause of fire and the extent of damage are yet to be ascertained.

Fire brigade officials and forensic experts will visit may visit the spot for inspection.
