ER initiates action plan to combat 'single-use' plastic
Kolkata: With the Eastern Railway launching a 'Shramadaan' programme at Howrah Station on Wednesday, no single-use plastic material will be allowed in the station premises from October 2, 2019.
"Eastern Railway launched a 'Shramadaan' programme at Howrah Station on Wednesday on the occasion of 'Swachhta Hi Seva' for creating awareness on cleanliness with special emphasis on plastic-free stations and railway premises," read a press release issued by the Eastern Railway.
'Shramadaan' refers to a voluntary contribution involving physical effort. This apart, it is also a way to help and change the environment for betterment.
Skit (Nukkad Natak) based on plastic pollution was also held at Howrah Station.
General Manager of Eastern Railway P C Sharma, Additional General Manager of Eatern Railway S S Gehlot and the Principal Officers of Eastern Railway also participated in a the programme.
Meanwhile, Additional General Manager of Kolkata Metro Railway SPS Chauhan, Chief Signal and Telecom Engineer of Kolkata Metro Railway Satyaki Nath and other officers also offered 'Shramadaan' at Esplanade Metro Station.
Chauhan and Nath along with other staff members took part in collecting plastic wastes from the station premises and disposed them of in dustbins kept at the station.
An awareness programme was also organised to ban 'single-use plastic'.
They also drew the attention of the passengers to use the plastic bottle crusher placed at the Esplanade Station and demonstrated how to use them as well.
Chauhan also counseled the food-stall staff at the station and made them aware about the demerits of single-use plastic.
Colourful banners and posters were displayed at the station premises to create awareness about the adverse effects of plastic on the environment.
