Environment dept Principal Secy stresses on setting up green industry

Kolkata: Principal Secretary of the state Environment department Arnab Roy on Wednesday stressed on the importance of setting up green industry which he believes is the future of the Bengal.
He was speaking at the Green Industry Conclave organised by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) at a city hotel on Wednesday. He said that green energy will bring new opportunities in the state. The environment-friendly industries have a huge prospect in the state. The industrial hazardous products often have adverse effects on environment. In most of the cases these harmful products are not segregated properly. As a result, they get mixed with other materials.
He also urged the people to produce organic energy and said they must focus on the renewable energy generation in the state. He said that people must show interest in producing energy from wastes. He also said that his department has tied up with the Transport department to run 20 electric buses in the city. He also said that the carbon foot print is low in the city. Kolkata is one of the states that have one of the lowest carbon foot prints. Bengal is doing a great deal of work in the sector of solid waste management. West Bengal government laid a great stress in making the city a carbon resilient one. It may be mentioned here that the CII will submit a conceptual proposal to the state environment department soon on how to set up an eco-friendly industry park where various facilities would be available such as waste water treatment plant, rain water harvesting, energy saving equipment, renewable energy system etc. Madhulika Sharma, Co chairperson, CII sustainability Task Force (ER), Rene Van Berkel, UNIDO representative were among the dignitaries who were present at the Green Energy conclave.
