Enforcement Branch arrests 2 for selling spurious mineral water

Two persons have been arrested by the Enforcement Branch and several mineral water producing instruments have been seized at New Town on Monday. The gang was allegedly selling spurious mineral water under the brand names of a few reputed companies.

Hashem Mondal, alias Sanjoy, and Asmat Rahman were arrested on Monday and would be interrogated by the investigators, led by a special superintendent of the Enforcement Branch. The investigators found that untreated water was being poured from roadside taps or tube wells and then packaged by those machines. Then those bottles were given tags of reputed brands and sold in the market.

It is also suspected that those accused were part of a larger racket. Police are confident that the other members of the gang would soon be arrested.

"They were selling spurious mineral water in different places of North 24 Parganas. It is almost impossible to identify that those bottles are fake and we have managed to capture the whole consignment that was supposed to be supplied somewhere else," said an investigator.

"This is probably a big racket. There are several others who are operating through Hashem Mondal and Asmat Rahman. Those arrested are only a smaller part of the entire racket," the investigator added.

Enforcement Branch, however, indicated that similar raids would continue in New Town area.
