Elephant tramples farmer to death

Kolkata: An elderly farmer was trampled to death by an elephant in Brindabonpur area of Beliator in Bankura on Tuesday morning, police said adding the animal has been moving around and creating panic among locals in the district.
The victim has been identified as Charu Bauri (65). He was a farmer. The incident occurred when a herd of elephants attacked him when he was working on the field on Tuesday morning. While other persons escaped, Bauri was crushed to death by one of the jumbos, a police officer said.
Forest guards are trying to drive away the elephants to the nearby forest, he said.
According to forest department officials, locals were alerted after a heard of elephants entered the area few days ago. They were asked to stay indoor as the elephants were roaming in the area.
Despite the alert, the victim went to his field on Tuesday morning when one of the jumbos attacked him suddenly. He failed to flee the spot after seeing the wild tusker.
He was crushed to death while some other villagers managed to flee the area. Police later recovered the body of the victim.
