Elderly woman's body found in Jodhpur Park

Kolkata: The body of an elderly woman with injury marks on her neck was found in a decomposed state from her residence in Jodhpur Park on Thursday morning.

The victim has been identified as Shyamali Ghosh (74) who according to the police was a retired stenographer. On the basis of the preliminary investigation, the police suspect that Ghosh might have been strangulated to death. The motive behind the murder is yet to be confirmed by the investigating officers.

The local residents of Jodhpur Park on Thursday complained about a foul smell emanating from the second floor of the building where the elderly woman had been living alone for some time.

They informed the police who reached the spot and found that the door of her room was locked.

As they broke open into the room and found the woman lying on the floor with a pillow near her body.

On the basis of circumstantial evidences, police suspect that the woman might have been strangulated as there were some injury marks on her neck.

Police also suspect that the accused might have hit her on the head with a heavy object to ensure her death.

Senior officers of the homicide department and the forensic experts visited the spot and collected samples from the room.

The Joint Commissioner of Police, crime, and Deputy Commissioner South East Division also visited to the spot following the incident.

The officers came to know during the investigation that the victim woman was single and lived alone in the apartment.

The police suspect the woman was murdered and ruled out all the possibilities of suicide. Someone who is well -acquainted with the elderly woman might have strangulated her to death.

The police are probing if some valuables are missing from her house. The investigating officers have also ruled out the possibility of the accused locking the room while leaving her flat after committing the crime.

"We have started a case of unnatural death. Circumstantial evidence however suggests that there may be some foul play behind her death.

The body has been sent for an autopsy. All possible angles are being looked into," a senior officer of Kolkata police said.
