Elderly woman found living with husband's corpse in Haridevpur

Kolkata: In a near rerun of the Robinson Street incident, an elderly woman was found living with the rotting corpse of his 82-year-old husband for nearly four days at their flat in Haridevpur area on the Southern fringes of the city till a foul smell alerted the neighbours on Sunday night.
They forced their way into the flat to find the woman living with the corpse.
After being informed, police reached the spot and recovered the body of Amar Kumar Sanyal (82) and sent it for an autopsy.
Police said the victim was residing at the flat with his wife Hashirani Devi. The couple had no children.
The locals told police that they did not see the victim for 4 days.
On Saturday night, they felt a foul smell coming out from the flat and this aroused their suspicion.
They knocked on the door repeatedly but nobody opened the door.
They broke open the door and found the woman sitting by the side of her
husband's body.
Police said the elderly woman was visibly angry when they entered the room. She was reluctant to hand over the dead body to the police.
According to preliminary investigation, police suspect that the victim might have died 4-5 days ago.
The woman did not reply to the question of the investigators as to how the octogenarian died.
She, however, uttered some words incoherently. Police also suspect that the victim's wife is suffering from some mental ailments.
The locals told police that the elderly couple did not mix with them.
The victim used to work at Kidderpore dock, police said.
The actual cause of his death will be ascertained after the report of the autopsy comes in.
