Elderly woman found dead

KOLKATA: The decomposed body of an elderly woman was found from a flat at Chanchal Sarani in Survey Park on Sunday afternoon. It is suspected that the woman had died at least 3 to 4 days ago.

According to sources, on Sunday morning, Partha Sarathi Guha experienced a foul smell emanating from his flat. Later, he realised that the smell was coming from the residence of his neighbour Monika Chakraborty's (60) flat. Immediately, he informed the Survey Park police station.

Police repeatedly knocked on Chakraborty's door but since no one responded they broke open the door and saw the woman had died while she was sitting on the floor. When they touched her, she fell down. Outwardly there was no decay in her body but her internal organs had decomposed which created the foul smell.

A source informed that her husband Saradindu Chakraborty has expired in August 2012. Since then she lived in the flat alone. Her son Sukarna lives in Jadavpur. It is said he used to visit her frequently but in the past couple of months he visited her fewer times.

Police came to know that Chakraborty was suffering from various ailments.

Probe is on to detect if there is any foul play in the incident. Sleuths are waiting for the autopsy report to know the cause and time of death.
