Elderly woman charred to death

Kolkata: An elderly lady was charred to death at her residence in Nayabad off Easterm Metropolitan Bypass under Panchasayer police station area on Saturday afternoon. The victim Mukul Bhowmik (68) was alone in the flat and the door was locked from inside when the accident occurred.

Police sources said that the sexagenarian was staying at her daughter's apartment and there was no one in the house at the time of the incident. Locals saw heavy smoke coming out of the apartment and broke open the door and found the elderly lady with severe burn injuries. She was rushed to a private hospital nearby where she was declared brought dead. The reason behind the fire and its origin is still unknown. The Panchasayer police station is investigating the incident.
