Elderly man kills wife, commits suicide by hanging himself in Keshtopur

Kolkata: Mystery shrouds the death of an elderly couple at Kestopur under Baguiati police station area. The bodies of Shambhu Nath Mondal (62) and his wife Jayanti (50) were recovered from their residence at Krishnapur in Barowalitala in Kestopur on Thursday late night.
"Preliminary investigations by the police suggest that the sexagenarian smothered his wife and the committed suicide by hanging himself," a senior police officer of Bidhannagar Police Commissionerate said.
The elder son of Mondal had taken his wife to the doctor's chamber and his younger son was also outside when the incident occurred.
When the elder son returned, he found that the room was locked from outside. When repeated knocks at the door went unanswered, he suspected something foul. He raised an alarm and along with the neighbours broke open the door to find his mother lying in a motionless condition seated on a chair and his father hanging from the ceiling fan with a piece of cloth.
Police sources informed that Sambhu Nath was a retired central government employee His wife was suffering from serious aliment for the last few years and the former having spent huge money for her treatment was suffering from financial constraints.
The police has also recovered a suicide note from the spot where Sambhu Nath stated that he has killed his wife and committed suicide. The bodies have been sent for post-mortem and both the sons of the elderly couple had identified the writing on the suicide note to be their father's.
Meanwhile, an incident of theft by allegedly spraying something was reported from Gouranga Nagar in New Town. An expensive cell phone and a motor cycle went missing from the residence of one Sripada Mondal. A complaint has been lodged at New Town police station.
