Elderly man found dead at home

Kolkata: An elderly person was found dead inside his house on the Broad Street in Karaya on Wednesday night. According to police, the deceased Biswajit Basu was found sitting on a chair with his throat slit.

According to sources, on Wednesday evening, Basu's daughter called him up but the call went unanswered.

She rushed to Broad Street and found the main door of the house was locked. Despite repeated knocks, no one opened the door.

Sensing trouble, she called up Karaya police station. Police broke open the door and found Basu sitting on a chair with blood all over his body. A sharp knife was also found in the room.

During preliminary investigation, cops found several injuries on Basu's body with his throat slit.

The almirahs were open and the valuables were stolen. Though it seems like a robbery, but cops are not sure about the crime motive.

Cops came to know that some local promoters were pressuring Basu to sell off his house and adjacent vacant land to them as they wanted to building high-rises on the plot.

Some of them even met Basu several times to convince him. On Thursday homicide section of Detective Department (DD) investigated the crime scene.

Cops are waiting for the autopsy report.

It is suspected that the killer is known to Basu as no sign of resistance was found at the murder spot. It is also suspected that the criminals had climbed the wall and fled after murdering Basu.
