Elderly man dies of cardiac arrest in Jodhpur Gardens

Kolkata: The body of a sexagenarian was recovered from an apartment that was bolted from inside in Jodhpur Gardens under Lake police station area on Thursday morning. The deceased Samir Chowdhury (64) who used to live alone in the first floor of the apartment is a retired librarian of Calcutta University.
Preliminary investigation by the police has revealed that the elderly person died of cardiac arrest. He was a bachelor and had already had a heart surgery. Chowdhury's elder brother and sister-in-law who lived in Rashbehari area would come there on a regular basis to take stock of his health.
They had taken the elderly person to SSKM hospital on Wednesday after he had complained of chest pain. He was diagnosed by a doctor at the hospital and after prescribing some medicines, he was advised to be taken back home.
After he returned home, they arranged for his dinner and left for their home at night. They told one of Chowdhury's neighbour to keep a watch. In the morning they received a call that the door was locked from inside and repeated knocks had gone unanswered. They immediately rushed to the spot and in presence of officers from Lake police station, broke open the door to find Chowdhury lying motionless on his bed. He was rushed to a nearby hospital where he was declared brought dead.
"We have initiated a case of unnatural death. There has been no complaints from his family members," a senior police officer of Lake police station said.
