Elderly man attacked with hammer, succumbs to injuries

Kolkata: A person was arrested at the New Town police station for allegedly hitting the head of a person with a hammer and attacking a few others at Swamijinagar in New Town. The incident happened on Tuesday afternoon.

According to locals, a person identified as Kumud Biswas (61), who is a resident of Swamijinagar, was having a cup of tea at a roadside tea stall on Tuesday afternoon.

Around 5 pm, the accused person identified as Adhir Bawali, who is also a resident of the same area, came there with a hammer in his hand.

Before anyone could understand anything, Bawali reportedly hit Biswas on his head multiple times.

When others present at the tea stall tried to stop him, Bawali allegedly attacked them too. Hearing the scream of the victims, locals ran to the tea stall.

Seeing resistance, Bawali fled the spot. All the injured persons were rushed to a private hospital in Baguiati where two of them were treated and discharged.

Biswas was undergoing treatment but his condition was critical. On Wednesday afternoon, Biswas succumbed to his injuries.

Initially after the incident, a person identified as Gopal Sikdar lodged a complaint at the New Town police station.

On the basis of the complaint filed, a case was initiated at the New Town police station on charges of punishment for voluntarily causing grievous hurt, voluntarily causing grievous hurt by dangerous weapons or means and attempt to murder.

However, as Biswas died charge of murder will added to the case.

According to the police, Bawali was drunk when he attacked Biswas and other people.

However, police are trying to find out whether Biswas had any enmity with the accused. Bawali will be produced at the Barasat Chief Judicial Magistrate's (CJM) court on Thursday and appeal for police custody.
