Elderly British tourist found dead at Jodhpur Park lodge
Kolkata: An elderly British citizen on a two-months tour to India was found dead in a guest house at Jodhpur Park in South Kolkata on Saturday afternoon. The woman, identified as Helen Maria, had put up at the lodge along with five other persons, all hailing from Spain.
The group came to India on October 6 from Spain and had reached Kolkata on Thursday and has been residing at the guest house since then. They were scheduled to leave for Mumbai from the city airport on Saturday night.
The Lake police station received information about the woman lying unconscious at the first floor of the Jodhpur Park guest house. A police team soon reached the address and found the elderly lying on her front, on a couch at the first-floor premises of the drawing-room inside the guest house. The sexagenarian from Florantiles, Campsite of Torrevieja Alicante in Spain, was moved to M R Bangur Hospital where she was declared brought dead.
Sleuths investigating the case informed that she had come to visit India with a valid passport along with five co-travellers under the leadership of one Peter George Robert Sayles. On Friday night, she had dinner and also had alcohol along with her co-travellers inside the guest house.
"Prima facie, we have detected no foul play and there has been no complaint from any corner as yet. Arrangement has been made for holding post-mortem examination of the victim to ascertain the cause of death," said a senior official of South-East Division of Kolkata Police.
The police have informed the victim's family members and after the post-mortem on Sunday, measures will be taken to preserve the body until her family members reach the city.
"We have been asked by the police to stay back for the sake of investigation," said co-traveller Marry Hanratty who had made a call on Saturday afternoon to inform the police about the victim.
The sleuths are also questioning the owner of the guest house for further leads in the case.
