Eid Milad-Un-Nabi celebrated with fervour in city

Kolkata: Eid Milad-Un-Nabi was celebrated with zeal and fervour across the city on Sunday. The Bara Rabiul Awwal processions were taken out on Prophet Muhammad's birth anniversary, known as Eid Milad-Un-Nabi, from Park Circus, Bright Street, Beck Bagan and other parts of Kolkata. Special food and water stalls were set up at crossings for people taking part in the procession. Police personnel also went along the procession to avoid any clashes.

"People celebrate festivals together. Every year we take out procession on the birthday of Prophet Muhammad. We thank police officials for the security arrangements," said a youth, who was a part of the procession. Prophet Muhammad, the founder of Islam, was born on 573 AD in Mecca (now in Saudi Arabia). His birthday falls on the 12th Rabiul Awwal, the third month of the Muslim lunar calendar. The day is also observed as the death anniversary of Prophet Muhammad.

"On Eid Milad-Un-Nabi day, we usually recite Quran in homes in groups and pray in the morning. We also exchange sweets among relatives during the day time. In the evening, we perform Milad, which is explanation on the teachings of Prophet Muhammad," said Rehana Hossain, resident of Bright Street.
